How do you prepare a surface and apply Zinox coatings?
Preparation and application conditions are part of the result. Start with the common approach, then follow the differences that matter for each product.
Prepare the work in four steps
1. Define the system before opening the container
Identify the product, substrate, equipment and coat count. Read the technical data sheet and label; obtain the safety data sheet. Prepare the required personal protection and ventilation. Do not borrow another product’s thinner, primer, drying time or spray tip: one brand does not mean one application method.
2. Clean, remove loose material and dry
Remove dirt, grease and contaminants. Remove peeling paint and loose material using the product’s preparation method. Z-Cleaner can be used during preparation; follow its dilution, contact time and rinsing instructions. A rinsed surface can still be damp: allow the required drying before coating. Use gentle rinsing to preserve shingle granules.
3. Plan conditions and drying intervals
Account for air, substrate and product temperatures, humidity, sunlight, ventilation and weather. “Touch-dry,” “recoat,” “light service” and “full cure” are different stages. A touch-dry interval does not establish rain resistance, heavy-traffic readiness or pool refilling time.
4. Respect film thickness and mixing
Coverage is not permission to spread a product beyond its specified film. Z-Pool coverage is based on 2–2.5 mils dry film; Z-Floor on 5–7 mils. Z-Floor is mixed 1:1 by volume and retains a four-hour pot life. Adding water or changing package size does not artificially extend these limits.
Application: the differences by product
Z-Seal
Clean with Z-Cleaner, rinse and allow to dry. Mix Z-Seal without thinning or tinting it. Documented methods are brush, a 30 mm roller and airless at 2,500 psi. For rusty areas, the published method describes a thin local coat, 1–2 hours drying, then overall application. That local interval is not a full-cure time or permission to expose the coating to rain.
Z-Steel
The surface must be clean, dry and free of grease, wax and loose paint. On rusty metal, brush off rust and flakes, then clean according to the cleaner’s instructions and protective measures. Mix well; apply by brush, roller or spray. The sheet generally calls for two coats. Application: 10–30 °C, maximum 65% RH. Touch-dry in approximately one hour does not establish the recoat interval.
Z-Shield
On asphalt shingles, clean with Z-Cleaner and rinse gently to preserve the granules. Allow to dry fully, mix without thinning and spray uniformly from top to bottom. Clean tools immediately with water. At 25 °C and 50% RH: approximately one hour touch-dry and a stated 16-hour hardening time. Ask Zinox for the brick-and-stone method and the applicable temperature limits.
Z-Stone
Plan for a prepared surface and two coats, as stated on the current product page. Coverage of 2,000 sq. ft. is per pail, per coat. The exact cleaning method, equipment, temperatures, recoat interval and return-to-traffic time are not established in the available reference. Obtain those parameters from Zinox before scheduling application; do not borrow Z-Shield’s drying times.
Z-Wood
The protection is intended for documented exterior wood and porous wood surfaces. The product page recommends two coats; coverage is 2,000 sq. ft. per pail for one coat. Allowable wood moisture, temperatures, equipment and drying intervals are not sufficiently specified in the current reference: obtain Zinox system instructions before application.
Z-Therm
Clean and dry the surface, then mix thoroughly. Indicated equipment is a roller or airless suitable for textured coatings. Confirmed coverage is 1,250 sq. ft. per pail, per coat. Specify the number of coats, film thickness, temperatures and drying intervals for the system. Coverage alone does not establish film thickness or thermal performance.
Z-Dry
Mix well and strain through cheesecloth before spraying. The sheet specifies a 313 tip, at least 1,500 psi and a 60-mesh filter. Rolling is not recommended; brushing is for touch-ups and spot priming. Use the system primer appropriate to the substrate; do not transfer Z-Steel’s DTM approach. Clean immediately with warm soapy water. Application: 10–30 °C; differing humidity limits require clarification from Zinox.
Z-Pool
Allow new concrete to cure at least 45 days. Prepare a clean, dry surface free of loose coating. The sheet describes acid treatment for new concrete: follow its instructions, protective equipment requirements and the preparation chemical’s SDS. Apply by brush, roller or spray, without thinning. Between coats: 24 hours. Through drying: 7 days outdoors, 10–14 days indoors. Establish the refilling interval before filling the pool.
Z-Floor
Stir A and B separately, then mix equal volumes: 9.45 L + 9.45 L for the complete kit. Pot life: 4 hours. Apply by brush, roller or airless; metal requires the specified pretreatment and primer system. Touch-dry: 4 h; recoat: 16 h; light service: 24 h; full cure: 14 days. Humidity limits and induction time have differing indications: obtain the applicable Zinox specification.
Z-Cleaner
For the stated coverage, mix one 3.78 L container of concentrate with four gallons of water. Spray, allow 5–10 minutes contact without letting it dry, then rinse. Let the surface dry fully before coating. On shingles, rinse gently to preserve granules. Wear the protection specified by the label and SDS. Cleaning does not repair a deteriorated surface or replace removal of loose paint.
Equipment and application questions
Is a primer always required?
No. Z-Steel is documented for direct-to-metal application without a separate primer. Z-Dry may require its system primer; Z-Floor specifies pretreatment and primer for metal. Z-Steel’s primer-free approach does not apply to every coating. Where the primer is not yet specified, obtain the Zinox specification rather than choosing a substitute at random.
Can every product be rolled?
No. Z-Dry is primarily intended for airless spraying and rolling is not recommended. Z-Seal has separate roller and airless coverage figures. Z-Wood and Z-Stone require detailed method instructions before specifying equipment or settings. Follow each product’s own sheet.
What if a parameter is missing?
Ask for the specific parameter: minimum temperature, maximum humidity, recoat interval, rain resistance, primer, film thickness or return-to-service time. Reach Zinox at 1 833 888 7738. A missing interval is not permission to borrow one from another product. Sheets evolve; consult the version linked on the product page.
